The quarter has begun and I hope you are excited about it. This is a very important quarter for SHPE and we need your support more than anything. Over the following weeks there will be a lot going on and we need help with some planning of activities. If you’re interested in helping out, then please feel free to come to our 1^st officer meeting of the quarter this Wednesday at 6:30PM in the clubroom. You don’t have to be an officer to help out and carry out events. Remember that elections are coming up soon and we need new members to take care of SHPE for next year!

As you can see there is a lot going on, and we would appreciate your help. Please come and get some information during our officer meeting. Also we will be having our 1^st general meeting of the quarter this upcoming Thursday at 5:00PM in Bourns A265. A recruiter from Tech Electronic Systems, David Vaca,  will be at our meeting offering internship opportunities, so don’t forget to bring your resume. Since he was a SHPE member last year, he’s giving us this great opportunity. The purpose of this conference is to bring middle school students to UC Riverside in order for students to start familiarizing with the requirements needed to attain a higher education, how to finance their educational dreams and empowering them to seek a college degree. Camp Escalera is meant to be a fun and learning experience.

In collaboration with MEChA at UCR we will hosting a 50 minute workshop for middle school students this upcoming Saturday from 11:10AM to 12:00PM. We need some volunteers to help us run the event. Your help will be appreciated!!!

Suspension liquids: Corn Starch

Description:

During the activity we will demonstrate the properties of corn starch, a suspension or Non-Newtonian liquid which acts both as a solid and liquid. Such state of matter is due to the compression and relaxation of the molecules of cornstarch when combined with water. When there is forced applied to the fluid it will act as a solid, and when no force is applied to the fluid it will act as a liquid. Different dye will be used to change the color of the mixture.

A small presentation and video will be playing on the background in order to get the students familiar with the experiment. An explanation of the experiment will also be provided by one or two of the members.

Since this is a hands-on activity, middle school students will have the opportunity to come to the front and play with the liquid. At the end of the workshop they will be more than welcome to take some of the liquid which will be stored in plastic bags so that they can show their parents back at home.

The return of SHPEnotize takes place Friday March 5 2010 @ Hollywood Live. SHPE chapters from all over Region 2 will come together one night to show once again why Region 2 is the strongest Region out there.

Presale tickets are $10 each. This event is guaranteed to sell out so buy your presale before they run out.

There will be a special live performance by B.O.B. as well as a Lingerie fashion show.

* We are planning on attending this event as a group. This is a major fundraiser by SHPE Region 2 (our region) and expect members from about 20 other chapters to attend the event. If you’re interested in going, then please let Roberto know.
